Gentile da Fabriano, 1423

Hardware needed for most of Fabriano’s bridles: 3 large bridle bosses w/rivet backs, 2 smaller bosses with rivet backs, 2 bit hangers, 2 to 5 dozen decorative tacks (depending on the bridle), buckle for throatlatch (presumed).

Hardware needed: 2-3 bridle bosses with ring or rivet backs, 1-3 strap ends, 2 bridle hangers, 2 bit bosses, 1 buckle for throatlatch, 2 dozen decorative tacks. Additional hardware is needed for reins.

Donatello, 1453

Hardware needed: 1 buckle for throat latch, 2 bit hangers, several dozen decorative studs. Additional hardware needed for reins.

Gozzoli, 1459

Hardware needed: ~120 decorative tacks, 1 “special” decorative tack OR 1 tassel, 2 to 4 strap ends with bit hangers, 2 bit bosses (if desired), 1 throatlatch buckle (presumed)


St. Martin of Tours, 15th. c.


Hardware needed: 2 bridle bosses, 2 bit bosses, 2 bit hangers, decorative bosses for the broadband. Additional hardware is needed for the reins. This bridle appears to be made of either fabric or tooled leather.

Battle of Grandson, Schilling, late 15th c.

Hardware needed: 4 bridle bosses, 2 bit bosses. This bridle is particularly interesting because it shows the crown piece being TIED over the horse's poll!
